What I’m Listening To #1

What I’m Listening To, the blog series in which I reflect on the musical territories I’ve been exploring during the last few months. Join me on this inspirational journey and listen along with the Spotify playlist below!

Immortal Technique – Revolutionary Vol. 2
This rapper has been on my to-listen-to-list for too long, so I decided to check out his work. And it didn’t disappoint. Tech’s unapologetic in-your-face verses are unlike any other rapper’s. With every track he sounds like he’s ready to start a revolution and by the end of this album I was ready too.

Sum 41 – Order In Decline
By now I’ve listened to the majority of Sum 41’s discography, but the one album I keep coming back to is “Order In Decline”. What stands out for me is the heavy and thrashy sound and the more serious tone compared to their earlier work. My only gripe is that the two slower songs don’t fit the overall flow, despite them being great on their own.

Jedi Mind Tricks – A History of Violence
Two things I particularly loved about this underground hip hop project were the well integrated samples and the unique timbre of Vinnie Paz’ voice. Together with the DJ scratching and old school sounding beats, these qualities really add to the underground sound that I like so much.

Stone Temple Pilots – Perdida
The previous album with new singer Jeff Gutt was great, so I was naturally looking forward to “Perdida”. Its acoustic style is surprising, but the Stone Temple Pilots DNA is definitely still present. Unfortunately, some songs aren’t as gripping as I wished they’d be, making them fall flat at times. Overall a nice album, but not their best.

Nine Inch Nails – Year Zero
Never have I ever heard such a consistently noisy produced album before. And never did I ever think I’d like it this much. In typical Nine Inch Nails fashion, this album takes you through noisy and industrial soundscapes, yet maintaining a visceral and organic character. A one of a kind listening experience for me.

Bon Jovi – Slippery When Wet
One of the most accessible albums I’ve heard in a while. The classic rock anthems on here are so easy and fun to listen to. By the time closing track Wild in the Streets came along, this album had me feeling nostalgic about a time I wasn’t even born yet.
